Christmas Decorations using Sashiko

I am delighted to be offering the Christmas Decorations using Sashiko workshop again, as it was such a great success last year. Ideal for both beginners and more a seasoned stitchers: You will prepare your fabric using your chosen designs. Don’t worry if you’ve not done this before as I will guide you. Then you will stitch a set of beautiful Christmas decorations, or lovely festive coasters using Sashiko. Sashiko is a type of embroidery originating from Japan, that uses a running stitch to create striking repeat patterns.

This interactive online workshop is run as one hour sessions each week for 4 weeks and will suit both beginners and more advanced stitchers. You will have the time and space to sew-along, chat and ask questions, and you can also continue stitching between sessions. By the end of the workshop you will have created your own set of 4 gorgeous Christmas decorations or coasters to keep or gift to loved ones.

Christmas Decorations using Sashiko

Traditional or Contemporary Style

You can choose a Brights Kit for a traditional look with jewel bright green, rich red and gold fabrics and sashiko threads. This kit uses templates that are inspired by images that connect to Christmas as well as Sashiko patterns.

Traditional Brights Kit

Alternatively, you can opt for the Contemporary Kit with better eco credentials. Using dark sashiko thread on an undyed (cream) organic hemp cotton fabric, you will find this fabric a pleasure to stitch. Here, the templates use Sashiko patterns to form Christmas tree designs.

Eco Contemporary Kit

If you prefer, you can use your own threads and fabric. This is a great way for you to use scraps of fabric from your stash or repurpose old clothes and you can just order the downloadable templates wich come as pdfs.

Sashiko Festive Table Decor

You can choose to stitch a table runner or placemats and coaster in the workshop. This workshop is aimed at those who have some stitching skills, but beginners are welcome and will be supported.

You can choose from a Festive Tree design using traditional Sashiko patterns in a contemporary way or the carefully created selection of Snowflake motifs to make your own unique product.

The workshop will be run interactively online in two sessions of 1½ hours each. These sessions will be timed to run about 4 weeks apart, giving you plenty of opportunity between sessions to enjoy the calming effect of stitching.

I offer an organic hemp* cotton fabric in both kits, as it’s such a pleasure to stitch and softens with handling. Both the Festive Tree design and the Snowflake option have a contemporary feel as they are stitched with navy (and cream) Sashiko thread. These designs were inspired by Christmas and Winter, but could be easily be used at any time of year.

Although I offer kits, I am more than happy for you to use your own materials and equipment if you prefer. Repurposing and reusing are a great way to create more sustainably.
